Indian States on High Alert as Centre Warns of Surge in Respiratory Infections Linked to China
Several states, including Rajasthan, Karnataka, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu, have activated their health infrastructure in response to the Centre’s directive. This follows a surge in respiratory illnesses among children in China. The Karnataka health department has issued an advisory, listing symptoms and precautionary measures for seasonal flu, while the Rajasthan health department emphasizes vigilance without immediate worry.
In Gujarat, Health Minister Rushikesh Patel stated that the healthcare infrastructure established during the COVID-19 pandemic is being reinforced as a precautionary step. Uttarakhand is intensifying surveillance in districts bordering China, and Haryana stresses the prompt reporting of unusual respiratory illness clusters. Tamil Nadu is enhancing preparedness in both government and private hospitals.

The Union Health Ministry has advised all states to review their readiness, emphasizing the implementation of operational guidelines for revised surveillance. While the situation is closely monitored, the ministry reassures that it is not alarming. This heightened vigilance follows a surge in respiratory illnesses in northern China, particularly among children. Chinese health authorities attribute the rise to known viruses and the first full cold season after lifting strict COVID-19 measures in December.
Experts suggest that, at present, there is little evidence to indicate a new virus causing these cases, adding a layer of uncertainty to the situation.
