India–Seychelles Relations Strengthened As Vice-President Radhakrishnan Meets President Herminie

Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan met Seychelles President Patrick Herminie in New Delhi on Monday to review and advance the bilateral partnership between the two nations. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation across strategic and developmental domains.

According to the Vice-President’s Secretariat, the leaders assessed key dimensions of India-Seychelles relations as both countries commemorate 50 years of diplomatic ties. They examined opportunities to strengthen engagement in maritime security, renewable energy, healthcare, higher education, hospitality and digital transformation.

Vice-President Radhakrishnan recalled his visit to Seychelles in October last year, when he attended President Herminie’s swearing-in ceremony.

Both leaders reiterated their shared commitment to peace, stability and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region, underscoring their aligned regional outlook.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held wide-ranging and substantive talks with President Herminie, who is on a State Visit to India from February 5 to 10.

Prime Minister Modi congratulated Herminie on his victory in the October 2025 elections.

The two leaders reaffirmed that India and Seychelles share a special and enduring partnership as close maritime neighbours.

The relationship draws strength from history, kinship and shared democratic values.

They noted that people-to-people ties form the backbone of the relationship and contribute to security and stability in the Western Indian Ocean.

Both sides recognised Seychelles as a key pillar of India’s Vision MAHASAGAR. The framework advances mutual and holistic progress in security and regional growth.

The leaders unveiled a Joint Vision for Sustainability, Economic Growth and Security through Enhanced Linkages, known as SESEL. This move reflected their shared strategic intent.

The Ministry of External Affairs said President Herminie’s visit came within 100 days of his inauguration. It underscored the shared resolve to deepen a long-standing and multifaceted partnership.

The timing also holds symbolic importance, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Seychelles’ independence and bilateral diplomatic relations.

President Herminie acknowledged India as a dependable partner. He expressed gratitude for New Delhi’s continued support in advancing Seychelles’ development goals.

The visit also led to the exchange of several memoranda of understanding. These covered health, digital cooperation, meteorology, culture, ocean sciences, food security and governance.
