INDIA Bloc To Protest Against Mass Suspension Of MPs From Parliament

Today, leaders of the opposition-led Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) group are expected to protest against the “undemocratic” way in which a record number of MPs were suspended from Parliament during the Winter Session. At 11 am, Rahul Gandhi, the former president of the Congress, and other alliance members will address the demonstration in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. According to Kharge, a statewide demonstration has also been planned for all district headquarters.

Suspension of MPs in Parliament

Following disruptions during the Winter Session of Parliament due to the December 13 breach of Parliament security event, a series of suspensions in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha followed, with requests that Union Home Minister Amit Shah provide a statement on the situation. Three more Opposition MPs were suspended from the Lok Sabha before of the session’s sine-die finish, bringing the overall suspension count to an unprecedented 146.

Opposition MPs, including those on suspension, protested the move by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday by marching from Parliament to Vijay Chowk.

Kharge asks government to behave democratically

Kharge claimed that the BJP did not believe in democracy during the previous demonstration, and he called on the government to “behave democratically”.

“Parliament is a big Panchayat. If one will not speak in Parliament where would one speak. It is unfortunate that Home Minister Shah and Prime Minister Modi did not come to the House to apprise about the security breach. They spoke about issues which should be spoken in the House, outside it,” he said, adding that PM Modi had violated parliamentary privilege by not speaking on the security breach issue inside the Parliament.
