His Philanthropy Reflected A Passion For Societal Progress, Says PM Modi On ML Mittal

The death of prominent industrialist Mohan Lal (ML) Mittal on January 16 has drawn heartfelt tributes from political and business leaders, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing deep sorrow over the loss.

Beyond his achievements in industry, Mittal earned wide respect for his philanthropy and for sharing rare, personal recollections of PM Modi’s formative years.

In a message shared on social media, Prime Minister Modi described Mittal as a distinguished industrialist who remained deeply rooted in Indian culture.

He highlighted Mittal’s commitment to social causes and said he would cherish their interactions, while extending condolences to the bereaved family and admirers.

Early Association With PM Modi

Mittal first met PM Narendra Modi in 1998 at a United Nations-linked programme in New York centred on poverty alleviation and the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.

At the time, PM Modi was an RSS pracharak and an emerging leader of the BJP. According to Mittal, PM Modi’s clarity of thought, global outlook and grounded demeanour made a strong impression, turning a professional interaction into a lasting association built on shared values.

Over the years, Mittal often recalled hosting PM Modi during overseas visits, including a memorable stay in Trinidad and Tobago nearly 25 years ago.

Despite being offered the host’s air-conditioned bedroom, PM Modi chose a small utility room instead, reflecting a preference for minimal comfort.

Mittal also spoke of PM Modi’s disciplined daily routine, waking early, preparing tea and breakfast for others, and maintaining a life free of excess.

Mittal recounted visiting PM Modi during his tenure as BJP national general secretary in Delhi, where he lived in modest MP quarters.

The absence of basic comforts, coupled with long hours of work, reinforced Mittal’s belief that PM Modi’s austerity was a way of life rather than a public gesture. Even while travelling, PM Modi reportedly saved from modest allowances and returned unused funds for party work.

Mittal frequently emphasised that PM Modi’s humility and service-oriented mindset remained unchanged despite growing responsibilities.

With his passing, India loses not only a respected industrialist but also a chronicler of values rooted in simplicity and service—memories that continue to resonate in an era of rapid change.
