Hillary Clinton And George Soros Among 19 Chosen By Biden For Presidential Medal Of Freedom

Outgoing US President Joe Biden will present the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 19 individuals on Saturday. This honour, the highest civilian award in the United States, recognizes exceptional contributions to the nation and the world.

The White House described the award as honouring individuals who have significantly contributed to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States. It also celebrates efforts toward world peace and other meaningful societal advancements.

Hillary Clinton And George Soros Lead Honorees

Hillary Clinton and George Soros stand out among the recipients for their distinct achievements. The White House praised Clinton for her decades of public service. It highlighted her historic roles as the first First Lady elected to the US Senate and as the first woman nominated for president by a major political party.

Meanwhile, George Soros, the Hungarian-born billionaire and philanthropist, will be honored for his global initiatives. Through the Open Society Foundations, Soros has supported democracy, human rights, education, and social justice in over 120 countries.

These honorees reflect Biden’s vision of great leaders who demonstrate faith, fairness, and decency, according to the White House statement.

Sports And Cultural Icons Recognized

In addition to political figures, Biden will honor sports legends and cultural icons. Magic Johnson, the basketball star who led the Los Angeles Lakers to five championships, will receive the award for his entrepreneurial success and philanthropic efforts.

Soccer legend Lionel Messi, known as the most decorated player in professional soccer history, will also be recognized. The White House acknowledged Messi’s humanitarian work through the Leo Messi Foundation, which supports healthcare and education for children worldwide. His role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador further underscores his commitment to global welfare.

Other notable recipients include actor Denzel Washington, U2’s singer-activist Bono, and fashion designer Ralph Lauren. The White House emphasized that these individuals have made extraordinary contributions to both America and the world.

The awards ceremony will take place at the White House on Saturday night, India time.
