The weather department has issued a significant warning for heavy rainfall across 31 districts in Uttar Pradesh, with similar conditions likely to persist until 13 August.
On Wednesday, the state experienced an average of 12 mm of rainfall across 40 districts, a notable 62% increase from the usual 7.1 mm.
Moradabad reported the highest rainfall of 82 mm, followed closely by Prayagraj with 71 mm.
Persistent rain since morning has already led to severe consequences in Etah and Agra.
In Etah, a tragic incident occurred when the verandah of a house collapsed under the weight of the rain, burying five family members under the debris. Two of the victims are in critical condition.
The rivers Ganga and Yamuna are experiencing unusually high water levels.
In Varanasi, over 80 ghats, including Assi Ghat and Subah-e-Banaras Ghat, have been submerged. The Lord Shiva temple at Scindia Ghat is almost entirely underwater.
The rising water has led to the suspension of boat services and cruises, with religious and cremation activities shifting to rooftops and streets.
In Prayagraj, the situation is similarly dire. The Ganga river has reached the Lete Hanuman temple, and the Yamuna is also overflowing. Approximately 2,000 homes are currently flooded, and another 5,000 are at risk if water levels continue to rise.
Flooding has hit Ainuddinpur and Chhota Baghada, and water levels have risen up to five feet in Gaus Nagar and Gaddha Colony in Kareli.
Residents are either relocating or taking refuge on their rooftops.
Kanpur and Kannauj are closely monitoring rising river levels, with the Ganga just 42 cm from the warning point in Kanpur and 61 cm in Kannauj.
From Prayagraj to Varanasi and Ballia, the Ganga’s water level is rising by 1 meter daily.
By Wednesday night, the water level in Ballia had reached the warning threshold and is likely to hit the danger mark today.
The Central Water Commission has issued an orange alert for Ballia.
Meteorologist Professor Manoj Kumar Srivastava from BHU predicts that rain intensity might increase further, particularly in Purvanchal.
The monsoon trough line, passing through Churuk in Sonbhadra, is likely to bring additional rain to the southern parts of the state.
In Unnao, rain has caused water levels to rise, with many areas experiencing water levels up to knee-deep.
The Ganga’s water level in Unnao is also approaching the warning point, remaining just 44 cm away from the alert threshold of 112 cm.
The weather department has advised residents in affected districts to remain vigilant and prepared for further rainfall.
The areas under heavy rain warning include Banda, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Fatehpur, Pratapgarh, Sonbhadra, Mirzapur, Chandauli, Varanasi, Sant Ravidas Nagar, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Azamgarh, Rae Bareli, Amethi, Sultanpur, Bulandshahar, Amroha, Moradabad, Rampur, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Sambhal, Badaun, Jalaun, Hamirpur, and Mahoba.
