Heavy Rainfall Triggers Flash Floods Along Beas River, Devastating Kullu District

On Thursday, heavy rainfall triggered a flash flood along the Beas River, causing substantial damage to both public and private property in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district.

Flooding surged downstream from Palchan to Patlikuhal and significantly impacted the region. Authorities have not reported any fatalities in the Kullu and Mandi districts as of now.

The intense flooding has wreaked havoc on infrastructure, with numerous bridges in Palchan and Nehrukund sustaining severe damage.

A newly constructed vegetable market building in Kullu also collapsed, further exacerbating the situation.

Flooding near Kalath has obstructed the National Highway connecting Kullu and Manali.

Residents living along the riverbanks in Nehrukund, Bahang, Rangdi, Aloo Ground, Kalath, 17 Mile, 15 Mile, and Patlikuhal were forced to evacuate their homes as the waters rose.

Damage to the roads in Palchan has compounded the challenges faced by the local population.

Significant landslides have closed off the Manali-Leh road, and the Manali administration has worked tirelessly throughout the night to alert and assist affected individuals.

Persistent rain since Wednesday evening has caused the Beas River’s water levels to rise, although they have begun to decrease, the risk remains high.

Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Raman Sharma, speaking to the media, confirmed that police personnel have been actively alerting residents with sirens throughout the night. He urged residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary and to avoid travel unless it is an emergency.

As rescue and recovery efforts continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of residents and assessing the full extent of the damage caused by the flooding.
