Heatwave Grips Delhi: Temperatures Soar To 47 Degrees Celsius

As temperatures rise steadily in Delhi, medical experts are warning residents to take precautions against the intense heatwave gripping the area.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a stern warning for Delhi, forecasting scorching temperatures and hot, humid conditions for the next week.

The maximum temperatures will hover between 44 and 47 degrees Celsius, indicating an intense heatwave.

On Monday, Delhi experienced its hottest day yet, with the mercury hitting a staggering 47.4 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest location in the country.

IMD issues severe heatwave red alert for Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh due to escalating temperatures, expecting continued severe heatwave conditions in the coming days.

What Medical Experts Say?

As per IANS, Dr. Satish Koul, Senior Director of Internal Medicine, Fortis Gurgaon stated, “Exposure to high temperatures for extended periods can precipitate heatstroke.”

As per IANS, Dr. Atul Gogia, Senior Consultant & Head of Infectious Diseases, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, highlighted the range of health issues associated with prolonged exposure to extreme heat.

“Excessive heat during summer months can lead to various ailments, including heatstroke, dehydration, drowsiness, and electrolyte imbalance,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government has taken decisive action by ordering the immediate closure of schools.

As per IANS, Dr G J Singh, Yashoda Super Specialty Hospital, Kaushambi stated, “A high body temperature may lead to nausea and vomiting, poor concentration and drowsiness, cramps, throbbing headache, confusion, dizziness, palpitation, fast strong pulse, and loss of consciousness.”

As per health experts, while the heatwave poses risks to all individuals, vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children are particularly susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

To mitigate the risks associated with extreme heat, experts advise residents to stay indoors during peak heat hours, wear lightweight clothing, maintain proper hydration, consume balanced meals at home, and avoid food from outside sources.
