Satidner Singh, a senior superintendent of police in Amritsar’s rural division, verified the occurrence and said that police had found the body of the unfortunate girl and had taken her father into custody. Strangely, he claimed that the victim’s family was not even prepared to file a complaint. But he added that police had opened an inquiry.
The individual was presented in court on Friday. The unrepentant father stated in court while dressed in Nihang’s robes: “My daughter had spent a day and a night in someone else’s house, and I am a man of dignity.”
He claimed that young ladies from Muchhal had experienced similar incidents in the past, but their families had imprisoned them when they returned home.
When questioned about dragging his dead daughter’s body around the community, he defended his decision by saying it would serve as a warning to other young females.
He was given a one-day police hold by the court, and on Saturday he would appear in court once more.
The accused said when he was brought before the court on Friday that he didn’t want to be like other parents in the town who would at most “confine their daughters” if they did something inappropriate. He was arrested a day after witnesses reported the crime. The man, dressed in traditional Nihang garb, declared, “I am a man of dignity.” The father claimed that he did not regret what he did and that it was done to prevent other females from supposedly doing what his daughter allegedly did. He was kept in police detention for a day by the court.
