Ghana Is A ‘Beacon Of Hope’ For West Africa, Says PM Modi During Historic Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted Ghana’s role as a ‘Beacon of Hope’ for other nations in West Africa, recognising its status as a vibrant democracy akin to India’s.

Speaking alongside President Mahama, PM Modi said, “At the core of India-Ghana friendship are our shared values, struggles, and dreams for an inclusive future.”

He added that the freedom struggles of both countries continue to inspire democracies worldwide.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his pride at being the first Indian Prime Minister in 30 years to visit Ghana.

He warmly acknowledged the ‘warmth, respect, and cordiality’ extended by the Ghanaian people and described the President personally welcoming him at the airport as a great honour.

PM Modi referenced significant projects symbolising this partnership, including the Jubilee House, the Foreign Service Institute, the Komenda Sugar Factory, the India-Ghana Kofi Annan ICT Centre, and the Tema Pakadan Railway Line.

In financial technology, PM Modi offered to share India’s experience with UPI digital payments, while assuring support for President Mahama’s economic restructuring initiatives.

Cooperation in agriculture was also underscored, with India ready to back the ‘Feed Ghana’ programme.

Strengthening defence & security

Prime Minister Modi emphasised the mantra of ‘Security through Solidarity’, pledging enhanced cooperation in armed forces training, maritime security, defence supplies, and cybersecurity.

Indian companies will also collaborate on critical mineral exploration and mining in Ghana.

Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to international cooperation, supporting initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.

PM Modi invited Ghana to join the Global Biofuels Alliance to further promote renewable energy.

Expressing alignment on global issues, PM Modi and President Mahama agreed on the need for counter-terrorism cooperation and UN reforms. They expressed concern over conflicts in West Asia and Europe, stressing that dialogue and diplomacy must prevail.

PM Modi lauded the Indian community’s role in Ghana, noting the contributions of Indian teachers, doctors, and engineers. He looked forward to meeting the community, highlighting their importance in strengthening bilateral relations.
