Five people were killed and 17 others injured when a private luxury bus carrying pilgrims plunged into a deep gorge near Saputara hill station in Gujarat’s Dang district on Sunday morning. The accident occurred around 4:00 to 4:30 a.m., according to police officials.
In-charge Superintendent of Police, SG Patil, confirmed that the driver lost control of the bus, causing it to break through the crash barrier and fall about 35 feet into the gorge. The bus, which was carrying approximately 40 pilgrims, was on its way from Trimbakeshwar in Maharashtra to Dwarka in Gujarat.
The tragic incident left five pilgrims dead, including two women and three men, who were killed instantly at the scene. Seventeen other passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the civil hospital in Ahwa for treatment. Some of the remaining passengers suffered minor injuries.
“The rescue operation is nearly complete, and the injured have been taken to the hospital for further care,” said a police official.
The pilgrims, hailing from Guna, Shivpuri, and Ashok Nagar districts in Madhya Pradesh, had been on a religious tour since December 23. The group had visited several religious sites across India, including places in Uttar Pradesh, Shirdi, and Nashik.
On the morning of the accident, they had stopped for tea at Saputara Hill Station in Gujarat. According to the police, within minutes of departing, the bus fell into the gorge just a few kilometers away.
