Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has said he will end his fast if the government provides an unequivocal assurance that no legal or retaliatory action will be taken against young protesters.
In a letter to Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Minister of State Jitendra Singh, Wangchuk thanked the Ministers for visiting him at Medanta Hospital and appealing to him to end his fast.
Referring to the ‘Chalo Sansad’ march on July 20, Wangchuk said the protest remained peaceful despite what he described as ‘atrocities and disproportionate use of force’ by the police. He expressed hope that no participant would face legal cases, harassment or retaliatory action.
Sonam Wangchuk also said around 65 Members of Parliament from different political parties had urged him to end his fast, reminding him of his responsibility to continue serving the nation.
“They reminded me that I still have much work to do in the service of our nation. I agree with them. I want to live. Want to return to my students, to education, and to the work that has defined my life. But I cannot do so at the cost of the very young people for whom this movement began,” he said.
Wangchuk said he would end his fast only if the government assured that protesters would face no punitive action. Otherwise, he would continue fasting indefinitely. He also called for an end to the use of excessive police force against demonstrators.
AN APPEAL TO THE GOVERNMENT
regarding breaking my fast…
Once the assurance from govt come I will also appeal to the peacefully protesting students to halt the movement for now and enter into dialogue with the government pic.twitter.com/gR6S8woF5R— Sonam Wangchuk (@Wangchuk66) July 22, 2026
Wangchuk has been undergoing treatment at Medanta Hospital after being shifted there following a court order. He was earlier moved to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police after fasting for 21 days at Jantar Mantar.
