Ganesh Idol Waste Turned Into Study Tables For Children In Maharashtra

Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations often generate large quantities of waste, particularly from Plaster of Paris (POP) idols immersed in water bodies.

An initiative highlighted in a video is addressing this problem by recycling discarded Ganesh idols into useful products, including study tables for children.

The initiative began with efforts to find a way to reuse POP idols instead of allowing them to become waste after immersion.

The project uses a proprietary recycling technology called ‘Murticycle’, developed to process discarded idols and convert the material into new products.

The video highlights the large number of POP Ganesh idols immersed every year. The initiative collects damaged idols and recycles the POP into reusable material.

It uses the recycled material to make more than 12 products, including study tables for children. So far, the project has recycled over 3,200 kg of POP and provided 760 study tables to schoolchildren in Maharashtra.

The initiative also aims to reduce waste from discarded idols by giving the material a new purpose instead of sending it to landfills or water bodies. It claims to have prevented around 5,457 grams of CO₂ emissions through its recycling efforts.

The initiative’s organisers say their goal is to encourage people to contribute discarded idols and become part of the recycling effort. By combining waste management with social support, the project seeks to give discarded Ganesh idols a new purpose beyond the festival.
