Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations are witnessing tighter environmental regulations as Tamil Nadu and Delhi move to limit idol immersion in natural water bodies.
Tamil Nadu has assured the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that it plans to stop Ganesh idol immersion in natural water bodies from 2027, while Delhi has already prohibited immersion in the Yamuna and other water bodies except at designated sites.
According to NDTV, the Tamil Nadu government gave the assurance during an NGT hearing on a petition seeking measures to prevent idol immersion and its potential impact on water quality and aquatic life. The government has also said that idol immersion will not be allowed at Chennai’s Foreshore Estate and Neelankarai beaches from next year.
The detailed scope of the proposed statewide measure will be clarified in an affidavit before the tribunal.
The proposed restrictions come amid concerns over plaster of Paris, paints and chemical materials used in idols and decorations.
These substances can enter water bodies during immersion and affect water quality and aquatic ecosystems. The petition has also suggested temporary artificial immersion ponds as an alternative.
Meanwhile, Delhi has introduced restrictions for this year’s Ganeshotsav and the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations.
The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has banned idol immersion in the Yamuna and other water bodies except designated sites. It has urged the use of natural clay, biodegradable materials and natural dyes.
The DPCC warned that immersion can pollute water and harm aquatic life. Urban bodies must provide temporary facilities, while residents can use buckets or artificial ponds.
Violators may face ₹50,000 in environmental compensation and additional penalties under the Water Act. The measures aim to reduce pollution while providing alternatives for devotees.
