Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh
Former President of Wrestling Federation of India, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, is facing a legal battle over allegations of sexual harassment. He has refused to accept the charges against him in court. The trial which is set to begin on June 1 is being presided over by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Priyanka Rajput at the Rouse Avenue Court.
The court informed Singh of the seven charges leveled against him, which include sections of the Indian Penal Code related to sexual harassment and criminal intimidation. However, Singh maintained his innocence, stating that he cannot accept a mistake he did not commit.
An associate of Singh Vinod Tomar also faced accusations under IPC section 506 for threatening. Tomar denied the allegations, claiming they were false and that he never threatened anyone.
The court has framed charges against Singh under various IPC sections based on allegations from six female players. Singh claims innocence, stating that charges were framed against him on the complaint of two wrestlers. He was acquitted of one charge related to threatening a woman.
During the proceedings, Singh emphasized having evidence to support his innocence if the Delhi Police conducted a proper investigation. His lawyer, Rajiv Mohan, requested Call Detail Records (CDR) to prove Singh’s absence during the alleged incidents.
The court has asked the Delhi Police lawyer to respond to the documents requested by Singh’s defence. In a previous hearing, charges were ordered to be framed against Singh under IPC sections for outraging the modesty of five female players.
The case originated from complaints filed by wrestlers, leading to an FIR against Brij Bhushan Singh. On June 15, 2023, the police filed a chargesheet against him, including charges of outraging modesty, making sexually related remarks, stalking, and criminal intimidation under the IPC.
