Maharashtra Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Abu Azmi has come under fire after making controversial statements in defense of the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb.
During a press interaction at the start of the Maharashtra Assembly session, Azmi defended Aurangzeb, claiming that the ruler was not cruel, a comment that quickly sparked outrage among political leaders.
Azmi made his remarks in response to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma comparing prominent political figures, including Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, to Aurangzeb.
Azmi claimed that historical discussions misrepresented Aurangzeb, highlighting his role in building temples and other acts he viewed as benevolent.
He further stated that Aurangzeb was not a “cruel leader” and emphasized that the political struggles of the time were driven by power, not religion.
Azmi defended his position by sharing examples of Aurangzeb’s actions, such as saving a Hindu girl from a priest and punishing the priest in a dramatic manner.
He also highlighted the ruler’s inclusive military, which reportedly had many Hindus, paralleling this with the inclusion of Muslims in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s army.
Azmi argued that India’s territorial boundaries under Aurangzeb extended as far as Afghanistan, claiming that the ruler’s legacy was being unfairly vilified.
The comments triggered widespread condemnation, leading to a formal complaint from Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske.
Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske filed the complaint at the Wagle Estate Police Station in Thane, which led to the registration of an FIR against Azmi under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including sections 299 (causing death by negligence), 302 (murder), and 356 (assault).
The police initiated legal action in response to Azmi’s offense of glorifying a ruler viewed by many as controversial, especially in Maharashtra due to his alleged actions against regional heroes like Sambhaji Maharaj.
Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, swiftly condemned Azmi’s remarks, calling for a public apology.
Shinde emphasized Aurangzeb’s brutality, particularly against Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who Aurangzeb allegedly tortured to death.
Shinde labeled Azmi’s comments as a serious offense, accusing him of being anti-national by glorifying a ruler responsible for such violence.
Azmi’s statement has intensified the political discourse in Maharashtra, with leaders from across the political spectrum voicing their criticism.
As the controversy continues to unfold, the debate on historical narratives and political legacies remains a contentious issue in Indian politics.
