Fadnavis Defends Pune Police Amid Porsche Crash Controversy
Deputy Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also oversees the Home department, defended Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar in the Porsche hit-and-run incident today. He stated that there was no need for action against Kumar as he has been proactive in handling the case.
However, Fadnavis announced in the Assembly that an investigation would be conducted into the alleged rate card system in Pune for operating illegal and unauthorized pubs, open-terrace hotels, and bars. Additionally, he ordered a probe to determine if there was any connection between RTO officers and the family of the 17-year-old minor involved in the Porsche case.
Fadnavis made these statements while responding to Shiv Sena (UBT) legislator Sunil Prabhu and questions from Leader of Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar, former home minister Anil Deshmukh, Nana Patole, and others.
The Deputy CM emphasized that authorities would spare no one in the Pune Porsche case. He noted that officials had arrested doctors for altering blood sample reports and had suspended some police personnel for delaying the minor’s medical test and failing to alert senior officers when registering the offence under Section 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code. The Police Commissioner’s intervention later updated the offence to Section 304.
Fadnavis also mentioned that authorities had taken action against 70 pubs in Pune, resulting in the cancellation of their licenses. He informed the Assembly that they are installing AI-enabled cameras in pubs to monitor closing times and verify the age of customers. Pubs that fail to comply will face criminal charges.
Fadnavis reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy for drug-related cases.
