Ex-R G Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh Questioned By CBI Amid Ongoing Investigation

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, to their Salt Lake office for questioning on Friday regarding the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the hospital last week.

The exact status of Ghosh whether he is under arrest or merely detained for questioning remains unclear.

This development comes after Ghosh sought police protection in court. The Calcutta High Court directed him to properly file the petition before considering it for a hearing next week.

Ghosh, who resigned from his position at R.G. Kar Medical College on Monday, had been under scrutiny for his role in the case.

The high court had instructed the state Health Department to refrain from appointing him to any new medical college positions until further notice.

The controversy intensified when, despite his resignation from R G Kar, Ghosh was swiftly appointe as the principal of the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH).

This decision led to protests from CNMCH medical students and junior doctors, who opposed his new appointment amid ongoing investigations.

The primary accusation against Ghosh is his alleged failure to report the discovery of the junior doctor’s body to the police immediately, resulting in an initial classification of the case as unnatural death due to the absence of an FIR.

Calcutta High Court Criticizes Ghosh’s Swift Reappointment; Questions Moral Implications

In a hearing on Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court expressed strong disapproval of Ghosh’s swift reappointment, emphasizing the moral and ethical implications of his actions.

The court stated, “The principal should be the moral compass for the institution. If he resigns citing moral responsibility but receives a new role within hours, it is concerning. We might need to intervene further if this issue remains unresolved.”

In response to the court’s direction, Ghosh requested a 15-day leave from the state Health Department.
