Engineer Rashid To Take Oath As MP; NIA Approves

Incarcerated engineer Rashid to to take oath as MP on July 5 as NIA gives shows no objection. National Investigative Agency on Monday said that it has no objection on Rashid taking oath a MP.  However, Patiala House court is scheduled to pronounce the decision on July 2. Court has reserved the decision on plea filed by Engineer Rashid on oath taking.

The revelation was made during the hearing of Engineer Rashid’s appeal for custody parole or interim bail to enable him to take the oath of office as a member of the Lok Sabha at the Patiala House Court in Delhi.

The NIA informed the court that if the court permits for oath taking, the agency has no issues.

But if the court permits Engineer Rashid to take oath as MP, the lawyer argued that he should be subject to certain limitations. This included refraining him from speaking with the media.

On Tuesday, the court is probably going to declare its decision.

Rashid Engineer was arrested in the 2016 Jammu and Kashmir terror funding case and is currently in jail. Rashid Engineer contested the Lok Sabha elections from jail registering the victory.

Notably, Engineer Rashid is facing charges under UAPA in the terror funding case. Rashid entered politics in 2008. Prior to this, he was working as an engineer. While Sheikh Abdul Rashid is the founder of Jammu Kashmir Awami Ittehad Party, this time Rashid contested as an independent candidate.

Engineer Rashid defeated the former J&K Chief Minister and vice president of National Conference (NC), Omar Abdullah in north Kashmir’s Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency by a huge margin of over two lakh votes.
