A significant rally, dubbed the ‘Ulgulan Nyay Mahrally,’ unfolded in Ranchi, organized by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and attended by a multitude of political figures from various parties. Symbolic gestures marked the event, with two empty chairs on stage, symbolizing the absence of jailed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Both leaders have been embroiled in legal troubles, with Mr. Soren facing arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case, while Mr. Kejriwal was arrested in relation to the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam.
Despite the absence of the two leaders, their wives, Kalpana Soren and Sunita Kejriwal, took their place on the dais, hinting at a potentially larger political role in their absence. The rally saw fervent support from attendees, with slogans like “Jail ka tala tutega, Hemant Soren chutega” (The jail lock will be broken, Hemant Soren will be released) and “Jharkhand Jhukega Nahi” (Jharkhand will not bow down) echoing through the crowd.
Braving scorching temperatures, supporters gathered at the Prabhat Tara Ground, with the mercury hitting around 40 degrees Celsius in the Jharkhand capital. Alongside Kalpana and Sunita, prominent political figures such as JMM supremo Shibu Soren, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann lent their strength to the opposition bloc.
The term ‘Ulugulan,’ signifying revolution, harks back to Birsa Munda’s struggle against British rule for the rights of tribal communities. With 28 political parties participating, the rally served as a potent display of opposition unity and resolve.
