Ten people, including a pastor, were apprehended for allegedly indulging in unlawful religious conversions in the Nanpara area in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich, said the police on Monday.
According to Nanpara Deputy Superintendent of Police, Rahul Pandey, pastor Baburam is accused of persuading poor villagers to adopt Christianity in Siddhanpurwa village. He was assisted by other people in his endeavour.
On Sunday, ten people including Baburam were arrested after a case was lodged against 19 people on charges of unlawful conversion. Pandey said that the purpose is to apprehend the remaining accused too.
According to the police, Baburam, along with his wife, were coaxed into converting their religion and adapt Christianity by promising to rehabilitate their health by curing diseases like cancer, among others.

Meanwhile, as per the reports, 427 conversion-related cases were reported between January 1, 2021 and April 30, 2023, in Uttar Pradesh. Following this arrests were made under the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion Ordinance.
After the introduction of the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion Ordinance by the Yogi Adityanath government on November 27, 2020, the government has taken stringent actions against those who are accused of practising love jihad and religious conversions.
Speaking of, according to the ordinance, conversion is a non-bailable offence with up to 10 years of imprisonment. This is applicable in cases where the conversion is made by imparting wrong information, by force, unlawfully or by any other deceitful and dishonest ways.
