ED Takes Charge: Money Laundering Allegations Against Godrej Properties In Housing Project Case

In a significant development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified its investigation into a high-profile money laundering case involving real estate giant Godrej Properties Limited. ED officials have summoned several key individuals from the company, including directors and officers, in relation to alleged irregularities in a large housing project.

ED Questions Project Director, Summons Issued to Key Executives

As part of its inquiry, ED has already questioned Tarun Chadha, the project director of Godrej Properties, regarding the financial dealings associated with the housing project.

Sources close to the investigation revealed that more directors and officials are likely to be called in for questioning soon. Previously, the ED had issued a summons to another senior officer, Gaurav Pandey, although he has yet to appear for questioning.

The Alleged Rs 202 Crore Dispute with Orris Infrastructure

The roots of this investigation trace back to May, when Delhi Police’s Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) registered a complaint by ORRIS Infrastructure, accusing Godrej Properties of failing to honor a Rs 202 crore transaction. The deal, intended to facilitate the housing project, allegedly saw Godrej Properties falling short on the agreed payment, sparking the complaint that eventually led to EOW’s involvement. Following a court directive, EOW filed a formal case against Godrej Properties, bringing the matter into ED’s purview.

Expansion Amidst Controversy: Godrej’s Plans in Mumbai

While these investigations unfold, Godrej Properties continues its expansion efforts. The company recently secured bids for three plots in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, earmarking them for a residential project projected to generate approximately Rs 3,500 crore in revenue. The project, spread across 6.54 acres with an estimated development potential of 20 lakh square feet, reflects Godrej’s continued drive for growth even amidst the legal complications of the ongoing ED case.

Implications for the Real Estate Sector

With the ED now closely examining Godrej Properties’ financial practices, this investigation has attracted significant attention in the real estate sector. The outcome could have substantial implications for compliance standards and the operational transparency expected from major players in the industry.
