Dr Dinesh Sharma: Linguistic Harmony Will Strengthen India’s Unity

Rajya Sabha MP and former Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dr Dinesh Sharma addressed a Hindi conference in Vadodara, Gujarat, highlighting that the integration of languages will strengthen India’s unity.

Speaking as the Chair of the Hindi Parliamentary First Sub-Committee, he said the Government of India is actively promoting Indian languages in governance, education, and public discourse.

Dr Sharma compared Hindi and regional languages like Gujarati to sisters and called Sanskrit the mother of all Indian languages. He described Hindi as an ocean that absorbs words from all other tongues, enriching itself over time.

He noted that despite being a multilingual country, 44% of Indians speak Hindi.

Dr Sharma further praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his commitment to the promotion of Hindi and Indian languages, and lauded Union Home Minister Amit Shah, a Gujarati, for his pivotal role in increasing the use of Hindi in official work from 35% to 65%.

Dr Sharma credited Gujarat—home to both Mahatma Gandhi and PM Modi—for playing a leading role in Hindi’s growth, both symbolically and institutionally.

Language and Education

Dr Sharma highlighted the New Education Policy (NEP), which emphasises the use of regional languages in instruction, making them central to the learning process.

He said this policy not only respects linguistic diversity but also promotes national integration by ensuring better coordination between Hindi and regional languages.

Addressing broader cultural shifts, Dr Sharma reflected on how modern trends, often influenced by the West, are distancing youth from Indian traditions.

He critiqued the westernisation of birthday celebrations, urging a return to India’s inclusive and spiritually rooted customs.

He also spoke about the rising emotional disconnect in relationships, observing that the sacred bond of marriage—once considered a lifetime commitment—is weakening in today’s fast-paced, individualistic world. Social media and cultural dilution, he said, have played a role in eroding family and social values.

PM Modi’s Model of Development

Sharma commended Gujarat’s transformation under PM Modi, noting how the state evolved from a crime-ridden region under Congress rule to a national model for development under BJP governance.

“Narendra Bhai turned Gujarat into a beacon of growth,” he stated.

He concluded by saying, “True happiness comes from humanity, not wealth.”

According to Sharma, spiritual peace lies in selfless living and contentment, not in endless material pursuits.

“Everything in human life is governed by divine will, and whatever God ordains is ultimately for good,” he said.

Dr Sharma attended the Hindi Conference and Suryakant Awards Ceremony, organised by Suryakant Educational & Charitable Trust and Gujarati Bol newspaper.

The event honoured individuals from various sectors for their outstanding work.

Dignitaries present included former Assembly Speaker Shri Rajendra Trivedi, Vadodara BJP President Shri Jayprakash Soni, renowned writer Dr Manik Nagesh, and ISKCON Vadodara Vice-President Sant Shri Nityanand Ramdas, among others.

Dr Sharma also addressed members of the press following the ceremony.
