Devendra Fadnavis took the oath as Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Thursday at 5:30 PM in Azad Maidan, Mumbai. Fadnavis, BJP MLA from Nagpur, was joined by Eknath Shinde, former Chief Minister of Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar of NCP as the two Deputy Chief Ministers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries attended the event.
The swearing-in ceremony drew over 42,000 attendees, including celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Sachin Tendulkar, and Kumar Mangalam Birla. Prime Minister Modi and several Union ministers, along with chief ministers and deputy CM from various states, also attended.
Special arrangements accommodated 40,000 BJP supporters, while 2,000 VVIPs, including religious leaders, had separate seating. Over 4,000 police personnel were deployed for security.
Fadnavis now serves his third term as Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He led the BJP-Shiv Sena government from 2014 to 2019. After the 2019 elections, when Shiv Sena split from the BJP over the CM post, Fadnavis briefly returned as CM with Ajit Pawar as his deputy. However, the government lasted only 72 hours.
After a split in Shiv Sena, Fadnavis became Deputy Chief Minister in the Mahayuti government led by Eknath Shinde. His third term marks a new chapter in Maharashtra’s politics.
