Dense fog covered Delhi and nearby areas on Wednesday morning as a cold wave gripped northern India. The thick fog reduced visibility to near zero in many places, disrupting transportation, especially rail and flight operations.
At 5:30 a.m., Delhi recorded a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that the minimum temperature would drop to 9 degrees Celsius. It also forecast a maximum temperature of around 19 degrees. The IMD warned of an overcast sky throughout the day, with light rain or drizzle expected by evening or night.
The dense fog caused delays at Delhi Airport. Officials urged passengers to check their flight statuses. “Both landings and take-offs are happening, but flights without CAT III Instrument Landing System capability may face delays,” officials said. They advised passengers to contact airlines for updates.
Train services also suffered. At least 26 trains were running late due to poor visibility. Indian Railways confirmed that the fog in Delhi and northern India caused the delays, creating inconvenience for many travelers.
The IMD predicted dense fog in the evening and night, along with light rain or drizzle later in the day. These weather conditions, combined with the ongoing cold wave, continue to challenge residents.
Dense fog and cold waves have become a common issue in northern India during winter. Authorities advised people to travel cautiously, especially during early mornings and late evenings when visibility is at its lowest.
As the cold wave persists, disruptions are likely to continue, affecting daily life and travel across the region.
