Amid a severe water crisis in Delhi, Water Minister Atishi has written to the city’s police commissioner, Sanjay Arora, requesting protection for the city’s water pipelines against potential sabotage. This appeal follows claims from the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) that there are signs of intentional damage to the pipelines.
Atishi’s letter emphasizes the urgency of deploying police personnel to patrol and safeguard major pipelines for the next 15 days, citing concerns that any foul play could exacerbate the water shortage already troubling Delhi’s residents. She highlighted a specific incident where the DJB’s patrolling team discovered significant damage to the South Delhi Rising Mains pipeline near the DTL substation in Garhi Medhu. The team reported that several large bolts, including a 12-inch bolt, had been deliberately cut, causing substantial leakage and disrupting water supply.
Atishi’s letter underscores the necessity of immediate police intervention to prevent further tampering. She wrote, “At this juncture, any foul play and sabotage will worsen the already difficult water shortage being faced by the people of Delhi.”
