Delhi Police De-Notifies Jantar Mantar As Protest Site; Names 3 Alternative Venues

Delhi Police has de-notified Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site and allocated three alternative venues for demonstrations in the national capital.

Delhi Police announced the decision on Monday under Standing Order Number L&O/48/2026, following a Ministry of Home Affairs committee’s recommendations on alternative protest venues.

The police de-notified Jantar Mantar and designated Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and East Delhi’s CBD Ground for demonstrations. It will issue separate SOPs for protests at the three venues.

The revised order partially modifies the earlier Standing Order Number L&O/48/22, dated April 28, 2022.

The announcement comes amid protests in Delhi against the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The Congress-led INDIA bloc had planned a march towards the Supreme Court to protest against the poll body and demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

Security arrangements have remained in place around Jantar Mantar, with barricades restricting access to roads in the area and police personnel deployed at key intersections to regulate movement and prevent unauthorised gatherings.

The Delhi Traffic Police, however, warned commuters of possible disruptions across New Delhi and central Delhi on Monday.

Authorities may impose restrictions or divert traffic at around 30 locations to maintain law and order during the planned Opposition demonstration.

Key roads and intersections likely to face congestion include the Dhaula Kuan flyover, Jhandewalan, Patel Chowk, Panchkuian, Connaught Place, Mandi House, Lodhi Road flyover, Bhikaji Cama Place and Moti Bagh flyover.

Commuters may face delays along Jantar Mantar Road, Ashoka Road, Sansad Marg and Tolstoy Marg. Police have advised motorists to plan their journeys accordingly and follow traffic instructions.
