Delhi Police have arrested Harsh Singh and Ruby Jain in connection with the alleged racial abuse and humiliation of three women from Arunachal Pradesh in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar.
Officials confirmed the arrests on Wednesday, five days after the incident. Further details are awaited.
The police have invoked relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act based on material available on record.
Police have also registered an FIR under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, invoking provisions related to outraging a woman’s modesty and promoting enmity on grounds of religion, race, and other related factors.
According to reports, the incident occurred on 20 February following a dispute over repair work at a rented flat in Malviya Nagar. Three women hired an electrician to install an air conditioner in their fourth-floor apartment.
Police said drilling debris allegedly fell to the floor below, leading to objections from neighbours.
The dispute escalated, with the accused couple allegedly hurling abuses, racial slurs and derogatory remarks at the women and the Northeastern community. The accused allegedly called the women offensive names, the women claimed.
A purported video of the altercation surfaced on social media, triggering outrage.
An ACP-rank officer is leading the probe under senior supervision.
The incident drew sharp reactions from leaders, including Pema Khandu, Conrad K Sangma, Angomcha Bimol Akoijam and Indra Hang Subba, who condemned the alleged racial abuse and sought strict action. Authorities have assured due legal process.
