The Delhi High Court has ordered the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to inspect Jama Masjid and its surroundings. This directive comes in response to a petition seeking to declare the mosque a protected monument. The court seeks clarification on the survey’s purpose and the role of the Waqf Board in managing Jama Masjid. The next hearing is set for December 11.
The ASI must explain why Jama Masjid has not been under its protection until now. The court noted that declaring the mosque a protected monument would lead to significant restrictions. Construction within 100 meters would be prohibited, while strict rules would apply within an additional 200 meters.
During the hearing, the ASI revealed that it spent approximately Rs 61 lakh on conservation and repairs of Jama Masjid from 2019 to 2021 without its protected status. The bench, led by Justice Pratibha M Singh and Justice Amit Sharma, requested the ASI to present a sketch or table of Jama Masjid. The court also demanded details on the mosque’s premises usage and the management of its revenue and donations.
Additionally, the Delhi Waqf Board must inform the court of any changes in the management committee’s constitution. The court has asked the board to provide suggestions for protecting Jama Masjid and its surroundings.
