Delhi Government Enforces Year-Round Ban On Firecrackers Starting 2025

The Delhi government has announced a year-long ban on all types of firecrackers in the national capital, effective from 1 January 2025.

This decision, aimed at combating the city’s worsening air pollution, prohibits the sale, storage, and use of firecrackers across the National Capital Territory (NCT).

In an official order issued on Thursday, the government cited Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, as the legal basis for implementing this permanent ban.

During a Supreme Court hearing on the same day, the Delhi government informed the court about its decision, emphasizing the dire need to address rising pollution levels in the city.

The order highlighted, “There is severe air pollution in Delhi, especially during the winter season and the levels of pollutants such as particulate matter concentrations (PM 2.5 and PM 10) far exceed the prescribed standards for air quality. The entire Union Territory of Delhi has been declared as an Air Pollution Control Area under Sub-section (1) of Section 19 of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.”

Under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, the Delhi government has implemented a complete ban on the sale, storage, and bursting of firecrackers in the NCT of Delhi since 2020, citing the worsening air pollution during the festive season.

The authorities have extended the ban to include manufacturing and online distribution of firecrackers to address the recurring decline in air quality between October and January.

This comprehensive prohibition aims to mitigate pollution and safeguard public health in the National Capital Region during these critical months.
