An approximately 18-year-old Class 12 student died on Saturday after allegedly setting herself on fire at Sarvodaya Bal/Balika Vidyalaya in East Delhi’s Krishna Nagar area, officials said. Police have launched an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The incident triggered panic among students and teachers on the school premises. According to officials, the Police Control Room received a call reporting a fire at the school in Delhi’s Shahdara district.
Police personnel from Krishna Nagar police station reached the premises and found the student in a burnt condition behind the school’s guard room.
Officials said the student had allegedly poured an inflammable substance on herself before setting herself on fire.
During preliminary proceedings, police recovered certain materials from the scene and the student’s school bag. Officials described some items as suspicious, but authorities have not confirmed their nature.
The Delhi Police called its Crime Team to inspect the site, examine the circumstances and collect evidence that could help establish the sequence of events.
“During preliminary proceedings, certain materials were recovered from the spot and the deceased girl’s school bag,” officials said.
Police added that they were examining the circumstances leading to the incident and that further inquiry remained underway.
Fire brigade personnel and police officers were present at the school as authorities began their investigation.
Investigators are analysing the available evidence and recovered materials to determine what led to the student’s death. Police have not disclosed further details about the items found in the school bag.
Further information is expected as the investigation progresses.
