The national capital came alive on Sunday as World Teachers’ Day was marked with the vibrant ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle – Special Edition’ at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.
The event brought together teachers, students, and citizens in a spirited celebration of fitness and learning.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, led the event as the chief guest, setting the tone for the day’s activities.
Part of the flagship Fit India Movement, the Sunday on Cycle campaign has grown into a countrywide effort to encourage fitness, environmental awareness, and social participation.
This special edition focused on honouring India’s teachers. They are recognised as the guiding force behind future generations. The event, however, celebrated their vital contribution to education and society.
In his address, Mandaviya commended the large turnout of educators, describing them as a source of inspiration.
“There are such a large number of teachers here. Teachers are a source of inspiration for students. By joining the Sunday on Cycle initiative, you get a great opportunity to teach children, educate society, and inspire the community. When we cycle, we need to maintain balance. Similarly, when there is balance in life, only then can we move forward,” he stated.
The Minister went on to highlight the campaign’s growing impact.
“Sunday on Cycle has become a movement. Across the country, millions of people cycle every Sunday to stay fit. I am happy that teachers from over 10,500 locations across India have joined this initiative,” he further added.
According to a press statement from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports issued on Saturday, nearly 1,000 participants were likely to take part in the Delhi rally.
Attendees included members of the Education Department, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Lady Shri Ram College, and the general public.
The 5 October edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle celebrated teachers’ role in nurturing future achievers. The event also promoted the movement’s motto, ‘Ek Ghanta Roz, Khel Ke Saath’ (One Hour Daily with Sports).
During the event, Mandaviya called upon citizens to show gratitude to their teachers and commit to healthier lifestyles.
“Let us celebrate our teachers who shape the nation. I urge every citizen, young and old, to join Fit India Sundays on Cycle and strive for a fitter, more Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” he noted.
Launched in December 2024, the Fit India Sundays on Cycle campaign has grown rapidly into a nationwide initiative. It inspires people to adopt cycling to stay fit and reduce emissions. The movement also aims to contribute to building a healthier country.
