At least two people lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries after a passenger bus carrying around 25 people overturned in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh area early on Wednesday, officials confirmed.
The accident occurred around 1 AM near Jhandewalan Metro Station, when the bus, travelling from Jaipur in Rajasthan to Delhi, reportedly lost control and overturned beneath the metro corridor.
The Delhi Fire Services confirmed the fatalities and immediately deployed rescue teams to the site. Fire tenders and emergency personnel began operations soon after receiving information about the incident.
Eyewitnesses said the crash trapped two children and a woman beneath the overturned vehicle.
Rescue teams pulled them out and rushed them to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Officials added that teams took several other injured passengers to hospitals, where doctors are treating them.
Visuals from the site showed severe damage to the bus, including shattered windows, broken seats, and detached wheels scattered around the area. Authorities used a crane to lift the vehicle to ensure no passengers remained trapped underneath.
Teams from the police and fire brigade conducted a coordinated rescue operation, securing the area and assisting the injured.
Officials said they informed the families of the deceased and those injured.
Preliminary investigations suggest that overspeeding caused the accident, as the driver appeared to lose control while passing under the metro line.
Police added that they have sent the bodies for post-mortem examination and will hand them over to the families after due procedure.
