After weeks of enduring “very poor” air quality, Delhi saw a notable improvement on Monday morning. The Air Quality Index (AQI) dropped to 282, placing the city in the “poor” category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
This shift came after a period of unhealthy levels of air pollution, offering residents some relief.
Despite the improvement in air quality, a cold wave continues to grip the capital, accompanied by dense fog that severely reduced visibility, particularly during the morning and night hours. As a result, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for dense fog, warning residents of potential disruptions.
The day started with chilly winds, with the IMD predicting a mainly clear sky throughout the day. However, smog and shallow fog are expected to develop later in the evening and night. The forecast suggests a maximum temperature of around 19 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 7 degrees Celsius.
The persistent cold wave, along with the dense fog, has led to significant disruptions in visibility, impacting daily activities across the city. As the IMD continues to monitor the situation, residents are urged to stay informed about weather updates.
The recent rains, triggered by a western disturbance affecting northwest India, played a key role in improving Delhi’s air quality. This weather system helped reduce pollution levels, leading the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to lift Stage III restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) for Delhi-NCR on January 12.
As the western disturbance weakens, the IMD forecasts a drop in minimum temperatures from January 14 onwards. Cold northwesterly winds are expected to return, intensifying the chill in the region.
While air quality has improved, Stage I and II measures will remain in effect to ensure sustained improvement. Residents are advised to continue following pollution control measures while preparing for the upcoming changes in weather conditions.
