The NDA’s Vice-Presidential candidate CP Radhakrishnan met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday as part of his outreach before the September 9 election.
HM Shah later shared details of the meeting on social media.
Taking to X, he posted, “Met NDA’s candidate for the vice presidential election, Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan Ji. He is a seasoned leader with vast organisational and administrative experience. I am sure he will contribute immensely to India’s national discourse with his vast exposure.”
The meeting came a day after Shah targeted retired Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy, the INDIA bloc’s nominee for Vice-President. He accused Justice Reddy of aiding Naxalism through his judicial verdicts.
Speaking in Kochi, Shah revisited Reddy’s 2011 Salwa Judum judgment. The ruling had declared as ‘illegal’ and ‘unconstitutional’ the arming of tribal youths as special police officers in Chhattisgarh. It ordered the disbanding of such militias and directed the state to tackle insurgency through lawful governance.
Shah argued the verdict indirectly empowered Maoists and weakened the state’s fight against extremism.
“Sudershan Reddy is the person who helped Naxalism. If that judgment had not been given, Naxal terrorism would have ended by 2020,” he said.
The Minister further alleged Congress, under pressure from Left allies, nominated a candidate ‘who supported Naxalism from the Supreme Court’.
Radhakrishnan filed his nomination on August 20 in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The papers were submitted in four sets, each signed by 20 proposers and 20 seconders.
PM Modi signed the first set as chief proposer, while the other sets carried signatures of NDA leaders and Union ministers.
In terms of numbers, the NDA nominee holds a strong lead. The Lok Sabha has 543 MPs, and the Rajya Sabha has 233 out of 245 members. The BJP commands 240 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 102 in the Rajya Sabha. With allies, the NDA’s strength stands at 421—298 in the Lower House and 128 in the Upper House.
The INDIA bloc has 235 Lok Sabha MPs and 77 Rajya Sabha MPs, taking its tally to 312. If AAP extends support, the total may reach 325.
