Court Convicts Sanjay Roy For Rape And Murder Of Trainee Doctor At RG Kar Medical College

In a significant legal development, the Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court in Kolkata convicted Sanjay Roy for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Justice Anirban Das delivered the verdict on Saturday, and the quantum of punishment will be announced on Monday, January 20.

The court found that Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, had entered the seminar room at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the victim, a trainee doctor, was resting. The prosecution presented evidence that Roy assaulted and murdered the young woman. The charges against him were framed under Sections 64, 66, and 103/1 of the BNS.

During the proceedings, Sanjay Roy vehemently denied the charges, asserting that he had been falsely implicated. “I have not done this. Those who have done this are being let go. I have been falsely implicated,” he told the court. Roy further added, “I always wear a rudraksh chain around my neck. If I had committed this crime, my chain would have been broken at the crime scene. I can’t commit this crime.”

However, Justice Das maintained that the accused would be heard again on Monday before the final sentencing. “You will be heard on Monday. Now, I am sending you to judicial custody. Your punishment will be announced at 12:30 PM,” the judge stated.

Victim’s Body Found In Hospital Seminar Room

The tragic incident, which occurred in August 2024, led to widespread protests across the city. The trainee doctor’s body was discovered on August 9 in a seminar room at RG Kar Medical College. Following an investigation, Sanjay Roy was arrested in connection with the crime.

In addition to the murder investigation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been probing financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

In November 2024, the CBI filed a chargesheet implicating several individuals, including Sandip Ghosh, Dr. Ashish Kumar Pandey, Biplab Singha, Suman Hazra, and Afsar Ali Khan for their roles in financial misconduct. This probe followed a directive from the Calcutta High Court.

Sandip Ghosh, who was named in both the corruption and murder investigations, faced questioning regarding the trainee doctor’s murder. The CBI conducted polygraph tests on Ghosh as part of their investigation. Despite delays in filing the chargesheet, the accused, including Abhijit Mondal and Sandip Ghosh, were granted bail.

Victim’s Father Seeks Justice

Speaking to media, the father of the deceased doctor expressed his continued pursuit of justice. He emphasized that the DNA report indicated the involvement of multiple individuals, stating, “Not just one, but the DNA report shows the presence of four boys and one girl. We will feel some relief when the accused are punished.” He also voiced his frustration with the CBI’s handling of the case.

“The CBI has done nothing in this matter. We have raised several questions before the High Court and the Supreme Court. We did not seek answers from the CBI, but the court assigned all responsibility to the CBI,” the victim’s father said.

The court’s upcoming decision on Roy’s punishment is eagerly awaited, with the victim’s family and the public closely watching for justice to be served in this high-profile case.
