Congress Pays Tributes To Rajiv Gandhi On 81st Birth Anniversary; Observes Sadbhavana Divas

The Congress party paid heartfelt tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on Wednesday, marking his 81st birth anniversary, which is also observed as Sadbhavana Divas.

Senior leaders, workers, and members of his family gathered at Veer Bhumi in the capital to commemorate his legacy.

Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and party General Secretary KC Venugopal led the tributes. They were joined by party workers and supporters who laid floral offerings at the memorial.

Priyanka Gandhi’s husband, businessman Robert Vadra, and their son Raihan Vadra also joined the ceremony, underscoring the personal significance of the day for the Gandhi family.

Rajiv Gandhi became India’s youngest Prime Minister in 1984 at the age of 40, following the assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi.

His tenure lasted until 1989, after which he served as Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He resigned in 1990, and terrorists assassinated him the following year, a tragedy that shocked the nation.

Congress Reaffirms His Vision

Marking the occasion, the Congress party took to the social media platform to honour Gandhi’s vision for modern India.

Taking to X, the party posted, “On the birth anniversary of the architect of modern India, ‘Bharat Ratna’ former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi ji, we offer countless salutations. On this Sadbhavana Divas, remembering Rajiv Gandhi ji’s dreams, we reaffirm his resolve.”

Kharge also posted a tribute on social media, describing Gandhi as a ‘remarkable leader’ who inspired hope and introduced transformative changes.

“Today, as we observe Sadbhavana Diwas, we remember Rajiv Gandhi, a remarkable leader who inspired hope in millions and propelled India into the 21st century. Innumerable achievements for India exemplified Rajiv Gandhi’s legacy and brought transformative changes in the country. We pay our deepest respects to him on his birth anniversary,” he posted.

Sadbhavana Divas, observed annually on Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary, emphasises national integration, peace, harmony, and communal goodwill.

People often remember Gandhi’s tenure for laying the foundation of India’s IT revolution, strengthening Panchayati Raj, and promoting scientific and technological advancement.

His vision continues to resonate with the Congress party, which reiterated its commitment to carrying forward his ideas of inclusivity, modernisation, and development.
