PM Modi Pays Tributes To Rajiv Gandhi On His 81st Birth Anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on the occasion of his 81st birth anniversary, recalling his contribution to India’s political and developmental journey.

Taking to X, the Prime Minister posted, “On his birth anniversary today, my tributes to former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji.”

Rajiv Gandhi, born on August 20, 1944, in Bombay, entered politics following the assassination of his mother, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, in 1984. At just 40 years of age, he became the youngest Prime Minister in Indian history.

He served as Prime Minister until the 1989 general elections, after which he briefly held the position of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He resigned in December 1990, just six months before his assassination in a terrorist attack in 1991, a tragedy that shocked the nation.

According to the PM India website, Rajiv Gandhi grew up in New Delhi after his parents, Indira Gandhi and Feroze Gandhi, shifted there when his father became a Member of Parliament. His tenure as Prime Minister is remembered for promoting technological advancement, strengthening Panchayati Raj, and laying the foundation of India’s IT revolution.

Congress Leaders Offer Homage

Earlier in the day, the Congress party also paid floral tributes at ‘Veer Bhumi’ in New Delhi. Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and General Secretary KC Venugopal, along with several leaders and workers, gathered to honour the former Prime Minister.

Priyanka Gandhi’s husband, businessman Robert Vadra, and their son Raihan Vadra also offered floral tributes at the memorial.

The Congress party shared a message on X, stating, “On the birth anniversary of the architect of modern India, ‘Bharat Ratna’ former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi ji, we offer countless salutations. On this Sadbhavana Divas, remembering Rajiv Gandhi ji’s dreams, we reaffirm his resolve.”

People observe Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary as Sadbhavana Divas to promote national harmony, peace, and goodwill. On this day, leaders across party lines remember his contributions and his vision for a modern and progressive India.
