Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remark about the Congress party’s intentions, particularly regarding the safety of mangalsutra, by invoking historical instances of sacrifices made by Congress leaders. Kharge highlighted former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s donation of her jewellery during the 1962 India-China war as an example of such sacrifices, questioning whether leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) have made similar contributions to the nation
Kharge emphasized that BJP and RSS leaders have not participated in the National Movement and questioned their record of sacrifice for the country. He pointed out instances such as Indira Gandhi’s jewellery donation and the Nehru family’s contribution of their home, Anand Bhawan, to the freedom movement. Kharge argued that Congress leaders have made significant sacrifices for the nation throughout history.
Prime Minister Modi’s earlier allegations against the Congress, accusing them of wanting to redistribute wealth and take away people’s gold and property, were also mentioned. Modi claimed that Congress would conduct surveys and take extreme measures, even going as far as to threaten the safety of mangalsutras. He asserted that the Congress’s agenda reflects “Urban Naxal” thinking and criticized their approach to governance.
In response to Modi’s assertions, Kharge defended the Congress’s stance and accused the Prime Minister of spreading panic. He claimed that Modi’s speech had rattled the entire Congress and its allies, alleging that the Prime Minister’s assertions were aimed at diverting attention from the truth. Kharge reiterated the Congress’s commitment to its manifesto promises and questioned why the BJP was afraid of facing the truth.
The exchange between Kharge and Modi underscores the ongoing political tensions between the Congress and the BJP, particularly regarding economic policies and governance strategies.
