Congress all set to release first list of candidates for upcoming Madhya Pradesh assembly elections

According to a party leader on Friday, the Congress in Madhya Pradesh is set to reveal its initial list of about 130 candidates for the November 17 assembly elections on Sunday. This list would likely include state chief Kamal Nath.

The politician, who is close to Nath, claimed that the Congress intended to use five surveys to determine the nominees for all 230 seats before announcing their names in two lists. According to him, Sunil Kanugolu, a polling expert, conducted one of these surveys on Rahul Gandhi’s behalf, and Nath handled the other.

According to party insiders, the Congress cleared the names of 15 former legislators and roughly 90 currently serving MLAs for inclusion on its initial list. They stated that Nath will run from his home town of Chhindwara. Nath had already stated that following “Pitru Paksha,” the Congress would announce its candidates for the legislative elections.

This year’s Pitru Paksha, when Hindus pay respect to their ancestors, began on September 29 and will go through October 14. “Names of 103 candidates were decided and approved two days ago but due to the ongoing ‘Shraadh’ period, we did not announce their names,” said the close aide of Nath.

Congress to meet upon the list

“Meeting of our central election committee attended by our president Mallikarjun Kharge and his predecessor Rahul Gandhi is on in New Delhi. It is primarily focussing on picking candidates for the second list,” another Congress leader said around noon.

According to the leaders, the Congress screening committee for MP elections would soon convene to discuss the second list. The BJP, the sworn enemy of the Congress, has already made announcements for 136 assembly seats across four lists. More than one and a half months before the election was scheduled, on August 17, the saffron party unveiled its initial list of 39 candidates.
