PM Modi in Bhutan: Prime Minister Modi, who embarked on a two-day state visit to Bhutan, received a warm welcome in the capital, Thimphu. During the welcoming ceremony, local youth performed the Garba dance to a Gujarati song penned by PM Modi. Enhancing the beauty of the traditional Gujarati folk dance, the youth adorned themselves in traditional ghagra-choli and kurta pajama. It’s worth mentioning that this event followed PM Modi’s interactions with Indian expatriates and the local Bhutanese community.
PM Modi was captivated by the Garba performance in Bhutan. He extended greetings to all attendees, including officials and members of the Indian community. The Indian diaspora expressed joy at meeting PM Modi, considering it an honour. Earlier, a large number of people had gathered to warmly welcome PM Modi to Bhutan.
The diplomatic ties between India and Bhutan were formally established in 1968, following a treaty signed in 1949, which outlined the friendship between the two nations. This laid the foundation for exemplary bilateral relations, characterized by mutual respect and cooperation. India has consistently respected Bhutan’s sovereignty and refrained from meddling in its foreign policy. With a population of 800,000, Bhutan adheres to a non-aligned policy.
Bhutan maintains no diplomatic relations with major global powers such as the United States, the United Kingdom, China, France, and Russia. The 1949 treaty between India and Bhutan encompassed aspects of foreign policy, security, and trade. However, the provision concerning foreign policy was removed in 2007. As a result, India has emerged as Bhutan’s foremost economic and diplomatic partner.
