Centre Allocates Rs 1,000 Crore For Disaster Preparedness Across 15 States

The Indian government has announced a Rs 1,000 crore allocation to bolster disaster mitigation and capacity-building efforts in 15 states, an official statement revealed.

Key allocations include Rs 139 crore each for Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, Rs 100 crore for Maharashtra, Rs 72 crore each for Karnataka and Kerala, Rs 50 crore each for Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, and Rs 378 crore for the eight Northeastern states — Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.

The decision came after a high-level committee led by Home Minister Amit Shah approved the funding under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF).

The committee also included Union Ministers for Finance and Agriculture and the vice chairman of NITI Aayog.

The primary focus of this initiative is to mitigate landslide risks and enhance disaster preparedness in vulnerable regions.

Government Approves Funds For Disaster Training & Risk Mitigation

The government approved Rs 115.67 crore for a project to train civil defense volunteers nationwide, funding it through the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).

Previously, the committee sanctioned Rs 3,075.65 crore for Urban Flood Risk Mitigation Projects in seven cities and Rs 150 crore for managing Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risks in four states.

The statement stated, “To fulfil Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of disaster resilient India, the Ministry of Home Affairs has taken several initiatives to ensure effective management of disasters in the country.”

The statement further mentioned that several measures have been implemented to strengthen India’s disaster risk reduction system, aiming to prevent significant loss of life and property during disasters.

The Modi government has released over Rs 21,476 crore to states this year, including Rs 14,878.40 crore from the SDRF to 26 states, Rs 4,637.66 crore from the NDRF to 15 states, Rs 1,385.45 crore from the State Disaster Mitigation Fund to 11 states, and Rs 574.93 crore from the NDMF to six states, the statement said.
