In a major anti-corruption operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a 2009-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer serving as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Ropar Range in Punjab.
Authorities detained the officer and a private individual in connection with an ₹8 lakh bribery case.
According to the CBI, the DIG was allegedly demanding recurring illegal payments from a complainant. Acting on the complaint, the agency conducted coordinated searches across several locations in Punjab and Chandigarh linked to the accused public servant.
The searches led to the discovery of a massive cache of valuables. Investigators seized approximately ₹5 crore in cash (still being counted), around 1.5 kilograms of gold jewellery, and property-related documents linked to multiple assets in Punjab.
The CBI also recovered two luxury vehicles, a Mercedes and an Audi, along with keys to several bank lockers. Among the items seized were 22 luxury watches, 40 litres of imported liquor, and a range of firearms, including a double-barrel gun, a pistol, a revolver, an airgun, and live ammunition.
From the intermediary, officers recovered ₹21 lakh in cash, believed to be part of the illegal transaction.
Authorities took both the DIG and his associate into custody and will present them before the designated court on 17 October.
A CBI spokesperson confirmed that searches and further investigation are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the corruption network and identify any additional individuals involved.
The agency’s latest crackdown underscores its continued efforts to curb corruption within law enforcement and uphold transparency in public service.
