Budgam Encounter: Pakistani LeT Terrorist Yasir Killed In Operation Ashdar

Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district have identified the terrorist killed during Operation Ashdar as Yasir, a Pakistani national affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), police said on Saturday.

J&K Police confirmed the identification in a post on X, stating, “You Can Run But You Can’t Hide !”

Yasir was killed on Friday during a joint operation in the Ashdar Gali area, where security personnel recovered an AK-series rifle and other war-like stores.

The operation began on Thursday after security forces received specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the area.

A patrol of Para-commandos came under fire and exchanged fire with the terrorists, following which Rashtriya Rifles troops and J&K Police joined the operation.

Despite darkness and dense forest cover, the forces continued their efforts to prevent the terrorists from escaping.

Budgam has remained a site of several encounters since militancy began in Jammu and Kashmir more than three decades ago.

One of the district’s longest operations took place in 1995, when Pakistani terrorist commander Mast Gul entered Chrar-e-Sharief with a group of terrorists and laid siege to the Sufi shrine of Sheikh Nuruddin Wali.

The Army avoided storming the town to protect civilians and prevent damage to the shrine.

The standoff lasted 66 days before Mast Gul set fire to the shrine, with the blaze spreading into the densely populated town.

The Army, J&K Police, paramilitary forces and civil administration then launched relief and rescue efforts, while Mast Gul escaped to Pakistan.

The operation left 20 terrorists, two Army personnel and four civilians dead.
