BRICS Summit 2026: Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed Arrives In New Delhi

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali arrived in New Delhi on Friday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, strengthening Ethiopia-India engagement ahead of the high-level gathering. Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth received Abiy Ahmed Ali at the airport.

India, which holds the BRICS chair in 2026, will host the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.

The Ministry of External Affairs welcomed the Ethiopian leader and highlighted the Strategic Partnership between India and Ethiopia.

The Ministry said both countries are working to advance cooperation among BRICS members.

India has chosen ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’ as its BRICS chairship theme.

The agenda reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s people-centric vision, anchored in the principle of ‘Humanity First’.

BRICS leaders will discuss stronger intra-BRICS cooperation and exchange views on key regional and global issues.

The grouping includes Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the UAE.

PM Modi congratulated Abiy Ahmed Ali and Ethiopia’s Prosperity Party in June following their victory in parliamentary elections. He further recalled his visit to Ethiopia last year and pledged to deepen the Strategic Partnership.

Abiy thanked Prime Minister Modi and described India and Ethiopia as partners linked by history and shared ambitions. He further expressed confidence in strengthening bilateral ties.

During his December visit to Ethiopia, PM Modi held talks with Abiy, addressed Parliament and visited the Adwa Museum.

Ethiopia honoured him with its highest civilian award, the Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia.
