Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday signalled the start of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s independent electoral push in Punjab ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Addressing a large rally in Moga, HM Amit Shah said a BJP government would come to power in Punjab. He declared that the first Bill would prohibit religious conversions in the state.
He stated that religious conversions had risen to troubling levels under the current Aam Aadmi Party administration led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
Home Minister Shah asserted that the BJP now seeks a direct mandate rather than continuing as a junior coalition partner.
The Home Minister announced that the party had formally begun its campaign to form its own government in Punjab.
Wearing a Sikh turban at the gathering, he pledged decisive action against drug abuse.
HM Shah assured the audience that a BJP government would come to power in Punjab. He said the administration would eliminate the drug menace within two years.
HM Shah sharply criticised Arvind Kejriwal. He alleged that the Punjab Government had become an ‘ATM’ for the Aam Aadmi Party leadership in Delhi.
He accused the administration of squandering public resources while failing to deliver on electoral commitments.
HM Shah listed several promises from the previous campaign. He said the government failed to deliver 25 lakh jobs, expand healthcare facilities, and raise pensions for widows and senior citizens.
Shah also claimed that law and order had deteriorated, citing killings of village sarpanches, extortion by gangsters, and attacks on police personnel.
The Union Minister further alleged that nearly 45 per cent of India’s heroin trade occurs in Punjab. He promised strong enforcement measures to dismantle the narcotics network.
HM Shah also criticised the Indian National Congress and its leader, Rahul Gandhi, over claims that a trade agreement with the United States harmed farmers.
He said the PM Narendra Modi government had significantly increased agricultural spending and strengthened minimum support price procurement.
