Four passengers died when the Guwahati-bound Northeast Express derailed at Raghunathpur railway station in Bihar’s Buxar, including a woman from Delhi and one of her twin daughters. The fourth passenger has not yet been recognized, while the third casualty is from Kishanganj.
The Railways’ preliminary investigation indicates that the engine driver had to use the emergency brakes at around 9.40 p.m. on Wednesday when the train was traveling at a speed of 128 kph.
The next stop for the train was Arrah, which was located around 40 kilometers away from Raghunathpur. Three AC compartments turned sideways, and the train’s engine and all compartments derailed. Four fatalities were reported in two AC compartments, which took the brunt of the impact.
33 people were sent to Bhojpur, Buxar, and Patna government hospitals. 38 more passengers received first aid at the community health center in Raghunathpur before being released.
33, of Delhi, her daughter Akriti, 8, and Abu Zayed, a resident of Kishanganj, had all been brought in dead. Usha and her daughter were said to be close to the gate of an AC carriage. They tumbled to the track and perished as its gate opened after the emergency brakes were deployed.
