Assam Polls: BJP Announces Seat-Sharing Deal With AGP, BPF

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday confirmed the seat-sharing arrangement within the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance for the forthcoming Assembly elections. He stated that the BJP will contest 89 out of the total 126 constituencies.

The remaining 37 seats will be allocated to alliance partners. Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will field candidates in 26 seats, while the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) will contest 11 constituencies.

The announcement signals the near completion of ongoing negotiations within the coalition.

Speaking after a central election committee meeting in New Delhi, Sarma emphasised that discussions are progressing steadily and a unified electoral strategy will soon be finalised. He underscored the importance of coordination to secure a decisive mandate.

The declaration comes amid heightened political mobilisation across the state, with parties accelerating preparations ahead of polling.

In the 2021 elections, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured 75 seats, returning to power with a comfortable majority. The BJP alone won 60 seats, while AGP contributed nine.

Previously, the BJP contested 92 seats, leaving 26 for AGP and eight for the United People’s Party Liberal.

The alliance’s consecutive victory marked a historic shift, establishing it as the first non-Congress bloc to retain power in Assam.

Sarma noted that seat-sharing remains pivotal, especially in regions such as Bodoland, where regional parties wield substantial influence. He added that the BJP will release its candidate list shortly.

Polling for the 126-member Assembly is scheduled for April 9, while counting will take place on May 4.
