The Ministry of External Affairs Fact Check unit has refuted a viral claim circulated on March 16 by a social media handle, which alleged that China rejected India’s emergency urea request as geopolitical retaliation. Authorities described the narrative as unfounded and misleading.
Officials clarified that India submitted the request on March 12 due to emerging supply constraints triggered by the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Disruptions in gas supplies, particularly via the Strait of Hormuz, have strained domestic urea production capabilities.
The viral claim ignored broader developments in the global fertiliser market.
Reports by Bloomberg and Reuters indicated that China halted exports of NPK fertilisers on March 16 and extended restrictions on phosphate shipments. These measures aimed to secure food supply for its population of 1.4 billion people.
The MEA emphasised that the situation reflects a wider international crisis rather than targeted hostility.
Several countries, including Bangladesh and Pakistan, have also faced similar supply disruptions due to constrained availability and rising demand.
Authorities underscored that nations are prioritising domestic agricultural stability amid volatile market conditions.
The FactCheck unit urged the public to avoid misinformation that distorts complex trade and supply chain dynamics.
By debunking the claim, the government reaffirmed that current fertiliser shortages stem from geopolitical tensions and logistical disruptions, not deliberate diplomatic actions against India.
The clarification seeks to maintain transparency and prevent unnecessary alarm in the agricultural sector.
