Assam Police Foil Infiltration Bid From Bangladesh, Five Pushed Back

Assam Police successfully thwarted an infiltration attempt from Bangladesh, apprehending five illegal entrants, including four Rohingyas, in the Sribhumi district on Friday. The individuals were quickly identified and pushed back to Bangladesh, ensuring a swift response to the breach.

Assam CM Shares Details Of Incident

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed the details, stating, “Five Illegal Infiltrators pushed back. Maintaining strict vigil along the Indo-Bangladesh border, @sribhumipolice apprehended 4 Rohingyas & 1 Bangladeshi near the border and pushed them back.”

Police identified the five apprehended individuals as Abdul Raazzak, Saddam Hussein, Moktul Hussain, Nurul Amin, and Hafsa Bibi.

Assam CM Emphasises Increasing Infiltration & Border Vigilance

The Chief Minister emphasized the state’s ongoing efforts to prevent illegal entry. He noted a rise in Bangladeshi infiltration in recent months, which he attributes to the economic downturn in Bangladesh, particularly the collapse of the textile industry, leaving many jobless. Sarma also pointed out that the economic crisis has hit the majority community in Bangladesh harder than the minority sections.

“Over the last few months, we have arrested around 1,000 Bangladeshi nationals. They were promptly pushed back to their country after their arrest,” Sarma added.

Incentives & Cross-Border Concerns

Sarma suggested that some incentives provided by Indian textile industry owners have contributed to the increased infiltration, leading to greater cross-border movement.

He took up the issue of Bangladeshi infiltration during a recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, as well as with other Chief Ministers of northeastern states.

Assurances On Voter List Integrity

Addressing concerns regarding illegal voters, Sarma clarified that the government ensures that infiltrators cannot register on Assam’s voter list. “There is no chance that people crossing the international border from Bangladesh can enroll themselves in Assam’s voter list. We have arrested many illegal entrants, and within hours, they were pushed back to Bangladesh,” he stated.

The swift actions taken by the police ensure that, within a few hours, these individuals cannot complete the voter registration process.
